Silent Candlelight Procession

Six Years of Injustice at Guantanamo.
On January 11, 2008, Act Against Torture will mark the sixth anniversary of the first detainees' arrival at Guantanamo. We'll meet at 4pm on the steps of the federal courthouse at 95 - 7th St (at Mission) in San Francisco (near Civic Center BART). Dressed in orange jumpsuits we'll create a candlelit tableau of chained prisoners before marching slowly and silently in chains down Market Street, stopping at crowded plazas and corners (e.g., BART stations) to re-create our tableau. We'll end in Justin Hermann Plaza and form our final tableau beside the ice skating rink there. Please wear orange (we'll have a few orange jumpsuits, but not enough for everyone), or black if you don't have orange clothing. Bring a flashlight if possible to help light our tableau. We'll bring the candles. Please forward this announcement far and wide so we can finally stop the insanity.

Rethinking Plastics – Rethinking Our Lives
Why do we need to care about plastics? A lot of our food and drinks are wrapped and stored in plastic products. We are finding that plastic is not only bad for the environment, now scientific evidence shows that toxins found in plastics are also leaching into our food & drinks and into our bodies.* Learn what you can do to protect yourself, your family, and the environment.
See a short video: “Synthetic Sea” followed by a presentation – learn the facts
Learn what Sweden is doing right – change is possible
Get ideas in a how-to demonstration of "alternatives to plastics" in the kitchen & beyond
Learn about local resources to take plastics out of our diet
Learn about what parents and staff are doing in the NUSD around plastics & recycling
*FACTS ABOUT PLASTIC:
1. Plastic is toxic to our bodies: Many modern disorders are linked to plastics exposure, including asthma, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and premature puberty.
2. One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die every year through ingestion or entanglement in plastic.
3. In large areas of the Pacific Ocean, small plastic debris outweighs zooplankton by 6 to 1.
Join Stuart Moody of Green Sangha (greensangha.org) and the Novato Live Well Network and learn how we can free ourselves from this growing burden of plastic litter and plastic toxins.

With special guest Daniel Ellsberg
[Event leaflet PDF]
First Congregational Church of Oakland
2501 Harrison Street, Oakland, California [map]
(At 27th Street—across from the new Whole Foods Market)
Dissent: Voices of Conscience—Government Insiders Speak Out Against the War in Iraq (Koa Books, January 2008) profiles government officials whose loyalty to the Constitution and the American people ultimately transcended partisan politics. Originally scheduled for release in 2007, publication has been delayed until now by the State Department’s clearance process. Books will be available for author signing.
Author Colonel (ret.) Ann Wright resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service on March 19, 2003, while serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Mongolia, in protest of the war in Iraq and unnecessary curtailment of civil liberties. She joined the Foreign Service in 1987 and served in US Embassies in Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Grenada, Micronesia, Nicaragua, and Afghanistan. Before entering the Foreign Service, she served in the Army and Army Reserve for 29 years combined. She has Master's and Law Degrees from the University of Arkansas and a Master's Degree in National Security Affairs from the U.S. Naval War College.
With introduction from Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst who risked life in prison to release the Pentagon Papers.
Also a brief report back from Courage to Resist organizers who attended a successful Parliament hearing in Ottawa on December 6th in favor of a provision to allow Iraq War military resisters to stay in Canada. A noon vigil and delegation to the Canadian Consulate in downtown San Francisco on Friday, January 25th is planned.
$10 ($5 students/low income) donation suggested. Wheelchair accessible. Proceeds to benefit Courage to Resist’s “Dear Canada: Let U.S. War Resisters Stay!” campaign underway.

Santa Cruz Media Strategy Summit:
PURPOSE
A collaborative gathering of media veterans, scholars, activists & whistleblowers to assess and deploy our most powerful tools and messages to rectify history, awaken a critical mass, and effectively expose the accelerating corporate coup d'état.
VISION
Truth movements that arise after pivotal events like electoral fraud, 9/11, key assassinations and false flag ops can/should become more than forensic inquiries into a single heinous crime. They can also expose wider patterns of illicit control, deception and propaganda, and use their revelations to rouse entire societies to reject a malignant status quo.
Consequently, this is not a media conference to dissect or condemn the conglomerates, demand reforms, or even celebrate the increasing vigor of independent journalism. It is intended as a strategy session for already active and influential players to coordinate their most revealing messages, forge tactical alliances, introduce new distribution technologies, and mutually enhance each other's strongest work.
All participants will play an active role in nominal group processes over the weekend that will prioritize sources, analysis methods, and distribution models for trustworthy news dedicated to renewing activism and democracy in America.
